Efficient & Compact Fully Welded Construction Withstands Freezing
High Pressure & Temperature Withstands temperature Shock Withstands pressure cycling
Low Maintenance Close approach temperatures Proven Technology

Efficient & Compact
• Significant reduction in footprint - 20 % of shell & tube is possible
• Significantly lower cost! Competitive against other compact heat exchangers
• Economic use of exotic alloys

• Low hold up

Plate & Shell Heat Exchangers are extremely efficient due to the high turbulence created by the complex geometry of each plate passage. The high turbulence leads to much higher heat transfer co-efficient than conventional heat exchangers which in turn means that less heat transfer surface is required to perform a given duty. This means not only that the exchangers are compact but also that they are cost effective as less material is used in their manufacture.

Fully Welded Construction
• Added security against leakage
• No gaskets to deteriorate or replace

Our range of Plate & Shell Heat Exchangers utilises a fully welded plate pack at its core. Unlike conventional plate heat exchangers they do not have metre upon metre of gaskets which degrade in service. The fully welded pack gives high integrity and resists temperature and pressure cycling and the effects of freezing.

Withstands Freezing
In house testing verified by a 3rd Party inspection agency has demonstrated that it is possible to continually freeze a PSHE unit without any detrimental mechanical effects.

High Pressure & Temperature Capability
• -200°C to + 900°C possible
• Full vacuum to 100 bar g possible

Due to the exchanger being housed in an outer shell, the pressure and temperature capabilities can be extended way beyond that which a conventional plate heat exchanger can tolerate.
The outer shell construction is a pressure vessel therefore the normal pressure vessel codes can apply.

Withstands Temperature shock & Thermal Cycling
Unique construction prevents failures associated with other compact heat exchangers.
Because the platepack is only welded in 2 dimensions, it is able to expand and contract within the outer shell. The Vahterus Plate & Shell is proven in temperature shock applications where the exchanger has been subjected to temperature differentials are as high as 280°C.

Withstands Pressure Cycling
Our own test work has demonstrated that the Vahterus Plate & Shell can tolerate
very high pressure cycling loads without failure.

Low Maintenance
• Openable units are possible to allow access for shell side cleaning
• Cassette type plate pack allows quick and easy re-fitting

The Plate & Shell Heat Exchanger concept allows for either a fully welded shell, or alternatively openable units are available which allows the exchanger to be opened and the plate pack withdrawn for access to the shell side for inspection and cleaning.

Close Approach Temperatures
• 1°C possible

As the flow paths within the Plate & Shell Heat Exchanger can be arranged to be in pure counterflow ie. in opposing directions, it is possible to achieve approach temperatures down to 1°C . This is impossible in a shell & tube heat exchanger. This highly efficient method of arranging the flows together with the high turbulence generated within the plate passages leads to an extremely compact heat exchanger.

Proven Technology
A wealth of experience with 13000 units installed worldwide on a diverse range of
heating, cooling, evaporating and condensing duties.
Virtually any fluid heating, cooling, evaporating or condensing duty can be handled within a Plate & Shell Heat Exchanger.
The Plate & Shell range is growing all the time. Exchangers are available with surface areas from 0.5 m2 to 1800 m2 and connection sizes from 25 mm to 750 mm dia. Heat Loads from 5 kW to 100000 kW.
